ADAPTIVE REUSE

1/4th  part of a existing mill was adapted into a residence for the mill owners. To make the process cost effective this adaption was done along with other implements like Filler slabs, rope railing, use of M.S. sections and perforated M.S. sheets which provided necessary transperancy as well. The entire north wall was a common wall between the mill and the house, so the south facade is designed as a combination of solids (cement sheet) and transparent (glass) fixed and openable shutters that again combine with the grill for safety. Colours are introduced in a minimal proportions only on the interiors of the south facade. A play with primary colours gave a back drop curtain to the entire linear form making it intresting to look at. Here the linearity drove to the assigning of the spaces. In the common spaces visual barriers are avoided. The double height living room in all seasons receives very decent natural light rays daily through a circular skylight with an abstract grill that keeps on forming a play of shadows on the inner surfaces. With the moon light as well this skylight has reduced the need of artificial light on a large extent in daytime. The exteriors are purposely kept rustic to retain a sense of belonging to a mill.
